about

Pete had accumulated snippets of ideas that hadn't found their way into any of the original projects that he had worked with over the years on two DAT tapes entitled "Life In A Glasshouse". This was a loose project title he came up with in 1989, long before Radiohead used it as a title for one of their songs. As he listened through the tapes, two pieces really stood out as candidates for his next Glasshouse composition as they were in odd time signatures and ripe for "progging up". The first theme of "Rhudda Gawr" was initially entitled "Mayflower" and was written around the same time as "Black Swan" but, as his Fostex 4 track had met an untimely end, the ideas were recorded directly to two track with bass guitar, Taurus pedals and programmed drums. The penultimate theme goes way back to the early 1980's when Pete shared a house with friends in Leytonstone. He and drummer John Wynn were big fans of the King Crimson albums "Larks Tongues In Aspic", "Starless And Bible Black" and "Red". The duo would jam for hours in the cellar making an unholy racket with drums, bass and Taurus pedals. Their signature piece was entitled "Trebor Ppirf Expostulates" as one of their acquaintances had remarked that it sounded like Robert Fripp getting annoyed. They tried to find a guitarist to join in the fun and thought they were on to something when they jammed with Dave Weston of Chemical Alice fame. Unfortunately Dave couldn't get on with the force of nature that was John Wynn, an incredibly talented drummer heavily influenced by John Bonham, Ginger Baker and Bill Bruford. Pete and Dave went on to form a space rock band called Slartibartfast with drummer Ron Bennett and keyboard player Andy House. Though they continued to jam together at regular intervals Pete and John never did find that guitarist! So for "Rhudda Gawr" Pete decided to create music to link "Mayflower" with "Trebor Ppirf Expostulates" incorporating as many time signature shifts as he could, in keeping with the material that he and Arman had been playing with Cygnus Flare before Pete left the band. Like the other Glasshouse recordings though, work stalled as both Arman and Pete became too busy with other projects. Pete finally got time to work on this track in 2020 and now he had another theme in mind to help join the dots. Inspired by ascending Snowdon on camping trips with his youngest son Miles in 2015 and 2017, Pete searched for ancient tales of the mountain. He found an old Welsh folk tale about the battle between the giant Rhudda Gawr (Red Giant) and King Arthur and in typical prog fashion (Mr Wakeman take a bow) decided to make the tale the basis for the composition with sections devoted to fanfare, march, battle and requiem. Once this theme was in place, the music flowed easily and Pete published the finished recording on YouTube in Sep 2020.
